Getting to Glaumbær

Glaumbær is about 100 km or 1 hour drive from Akureyri and about 300 km from Reykjavík. Glaumbær is only about a 5-minute drive from Route 1.The museum area is located in Skagafjörður in Northwest Iceland, about a 5-minute drive from Route 1. The museum is only accessible by private car, as there is no direct public transportation to Glaumbær.

Strætó (the public bus system) operates between Reykjavík and Akureyri, with stops in Sauðárkrókur and Varmahlíð. You can read more about Strætó routes here.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Free admission for a care partner accompanying a visitor with a disability.

  • Restrooms: Restrooms are located by the parking area, and an accessible restroom for individuals with disabilities is open 24/7, year-round.
  • Museum Grounds: It is possible to request permission to drive a car into the museum grounds to view the houses from the outside, depending on conditions.
  • Exhibitions: Please note that unfortunately, the museum exhibitions are not wheelchair accessible.
  • Café: The café is wheelchair accessible via the back entrance. Please contact staff for assistance with opening the door and placing the wheelchair ramp.
