Life in Turf Houses in the 19th Century

Baðstofan í Glaumbæ

In the turf house exhibition, stepping through the farmhouse door feels like stepping back in time. The focus is on how people lived and prepared food in their daily lives. In the kitchen, an open hearth was used for cooking. Food was stored in barrels and tubs in the pantries, then portioned into wooden bowls or dishes and carried to the people, who ate while sitting on their beds in the communal living room, the baðstofa.

The layout of this centuries-old farmhouse and the everyday tools displayed in their natural setting offer a vivid glimpse into a bygone era and the daily routines of the people who once lived there.
